New Years resolutions are difficult to start let alone keep. I started mine before New Years so I was more likely to be motivated to keep it. Mine is to go to the gym three times a week. Here are some helpful tips to keep exercise resolutions up and going:
1. Realistic Goals - The best way to set a exercise resolution is to make it something realistic. Lets be serious, your not going to start going to the gym everyday. Start with something easy and work your way up. Set small goals along the way to keep you motivated. Make sure to schedule your workouts every week.
2. Let's Get Physical - Make sure to do a good combo between cardio and strength training. I typically do between 30-45 mins of cardio and then do at least 20 mins of strength training. Be sure to stay within your limits, if this is your first time working out in a while don't try doing an hour of cardio.
3. Stay Hydrated - You can become dehydrated easily if your not use to working out so make sure to keep hydrating before, during and after your workout. There are a lot of sports and energy drinks out there but I believe the best way to hydrate is with good old water.
4. The Buddy System - Working out with a buddy can always help motivate you to get to the gym. This personally doesn't work for me because I like going at my own pace but it is very effective for others. The only downside to this arrangement is that if your buddy flakes out you lose your dependency.
5. Keep Your Eyes to Your Self - One of the biggest reasons we don't go to the gym is because we look around and see all these really fit people and feel embarrassed. It isn't fair to compare your self to others. You are working hard on your own goal so keep it up!
New Years exercise resolutions are probably one of the hardest to keep but as long as you really want it you can do it. What is your motivation? Mine is wanting to be healthy for my self. It is important to always take care of your self. How can you take care of someone else if you can't take care of your self? Keep up the good work and share your favorite exercise tip. Have a beautiful day!
